5.8 Summary

By comparing metapolicy supporting processes with systems management, we can derive, that policies and the policy life cycle need to be managed. Metapolicies are the appropriate concept fulfilling the management needs. A definition of metapolicies resulting of the self application of the policy concept is given. The difference between passive and active metapolicies is shown. A classification of metapolicies is elaborated. The classification presented covers all management areas needed to manage the policies, their life cycle and the supporting processes in a policy-based management system. This classification enables the writer of metapolicies to associate a metapolicy with a certain state or process in the policy life cycle. Examples for each class of metapolicies are presented. Properties and characteristics of metapolicies are discussed.

The next chapter shows the integration of the metapolicy concept into an existing policy-based management system.
