Flashcards go VR - Conception, implementation and comparison of a VR flashcard application with classic, physical card index boxes and existing app solutions

Background

Flashcards are a tool for systematic learning and were developed in 1973 by the Austrian journalist Sebastian Leitner. For this purpose, a question or keyword (e.g. vocabulary, date etc.) is written on the front of a card and the answer or solution (the fact to be learned) is written on the back of the card. The contents to be learned are then repeated at regular intervals. The system behind all this is based on the so-called spaced repetition effect. Contents that are learned over a longer period of time at selected points of time, are better remembered than those that are intensively repeated in a short period of time.

In addition to classic, physical card index boxes, there are meanwhile a number of digital card index systems which, for example, adapt the repetition cycles to the respective person, allow the integration of additional media to enable multi-channel learning or involve the learner even more actively.

In the context of this research project it will be investigated whether the level of interaction and immersion can be further increased by the use of virtual reality and whether this has a measurable effect on the learning success. For this purpose, in addition to a didactic and technical overall concept, a VR flashcard application will be implemented and tested within a user study.
