Implementation and evaluation of protocol diversification for Moving Target Defense

Networks are constant under threat, though security measures are often limited to the attack. Identifying mechanisms to dynamically adjust parameters to increase defenses is a promising strategy. Therefore, a redefinition and extension of network-level MTD techniques, which differs from existing approaches such as Port Hopping (PH) and Network Address Shuffling (NAS), is needed. This work will investigate how protocol diversification can be used as an additional MTD approach. Moreover, a comparison among current and novel techniques by using standard metrics can help benchmarking different approaches.

Goal:

The goal of this master thesis is to implement a novel network-level MTD approach using protocol diversification.

Qualifications:

  • Students from Computer Science, Media Informatics or related areas
  • Ideally with previous knowledge in Networking (MTD is a plus but not required)
  • Programming skills in Python
  • Good communication skills

Tasks:

  1. Literature research on Moving Target Defense (MTD)
  2. Conceptualize and develop Network-Level approaches on MTD
  3. Implement and extend the state-of-the-art in the topic
  4. Evaluate the implementation against existing approaches / benchmark
